A cataract is the clouding of your natural lens. It causes blurry vision, difficulty reading and glare when driving.
Cataract surgery replaces your cloudy lens with a clear, advanced one, allowing you to regain vibrant vision and take back control of your daily life. Mr Mitry has treated thousands of patients and will discuss in detail with you the different lens choices available.

Benefits:

  • Exceptional results: Over 90% of patients achieve excellent distance vision (20/25 or better) without glasses.
  • Patient satisfaction: Cataract surgery boasts high satisfaction rates with minimal complications.
  • Efficient procedure: The surgery is quick, typically under 30 minutes, and you can return home the same day.
  • Rapid recovery: Many patients experience improved vision as early as the next day, with a smooth and swift recovery.
  • Long-term solution: The advanced lens implanted during surgery is permanent and requires no replacement.

Considerations:

  • Your suitability depends on your individual lifestyle and visual goals, and we are here to guide you in making the best choice.
Modern cataract surgery is the most commonly performed elective operation globally. Despite every effort, in rare situations, complications can occur. The risk of a complication is significantly lower if the operation is performed by an experienced surgeon and if the complication is managed appropriately. The following are notable risks of cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery:

  • 1 in 1000 (0.001%) risk of a serious complication such as an infection within the eye (which can occur a few days after the surgery) or bleeding within the eye (which can occur at the time of surgery).
  • 1 in 100 (1%) patients may require a second operation on the same eye. This may be to re-position or insert an intraocular lens. Occasionally the lens can’t be placed in the eye at the time of initial surgery and requires a second operation to do so.
  • 1 in 10 (10%) patients can develop a membrane over the new intraocular lens. This is called posterior capsular opacification. This can result in vision becoming blurry again. If this does occur it can be treated by a simple outpatient laser procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy.

In this video Danny Mitry explains the risks further

Lens choice is one of the most important decisions for your surgery. Measurements (known as biometry) are taken prior to the surgery in order to ensure that the correct lens implant is used. This usually allows the surgeon to aim for a particular focus for the eye post-operatively. During your consultation, Mr Mitry will discuss with you the options available, which may be best suited to your visual requirements.

A standard (monofocal) lens implant will correct your distance vision as clearly as possible. Some people have some astigmatism, which means the cornea is more oval in shape than average. A toric lens will be required to treat astigmatism to provide properly focused vision. Many patients with monofocal lens implants benefit from monovision. This is where one eye is set for distance vision and the other for more near vision. This improves intermediate and near vision (particularly computer use) and in some cases individuals do not need reading glasses at all, however, not all patients are well suited to this correction.

Multifocal lenses can provide a far greater range of focus. Trifocal lenses target near, intermediate and distance vision and between 80-90% of people are spectacle-free with trifocal lenses. However, not all patients can tolerate multifocal IOLs equally well. Due to the optical design of these lenses, some patients may experience side effects such as halos around light sources, particularly at night. A small proportion of people may require reading glasses for some tasks. The potential downside of trifocal lenses is a comprise in the quality of distance vision as well as optical side effects (glare and haloes), particularly at night.

Extended Depth of Focus Lenses (EDoF) lenses let you see clearly at far and intermediate distances. A proportion of patients will however need reading glasses for certain print sizes. They provide greater spectacle independence than monofocal lenses, while inducing less visual side effects compared to trifocal lenses. This balance of increased spectacle independence and less visual phenomena is particularly attractive to patients with an active lifestyle, who wish to be spectacle- free for most of their daily activities but are more sensitive to halos and glare.

Here is a short video that shows the steps of cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange

Your eye may feel a little sore after surgery and it can be a bit red. Patients often feel like they have a gritty feeling for several days after surgery. Some patients do not feel any discomfort. Your vision will improve in the initial days following surgery and will continue to stabilise in the subsequent weeks.

Do cataracts and reading glasses hold you back?

For many over 60, cataracts and the hassle of reading glasses can make everyday tasks frustrating and life less enjoyable. But it doesn’t have to be this way

You struggle with cloudy vision

Do you find it harder to see clearly, especially in low light or bright sunlight? Cataracts cause a gradual loss of clarity, leaving the world looking hazy and colours less vibrant.

Book free phone assessment with our expert team. We’ll assess your vision, answer your questions, and create a personalised plan to restore your sight and improve your quality of life.

Glasses feel like a constant obstacle

Switching between glasses for reading, driving, or simply looking at a menu can feel exhausting and impractical. These interruptions interfere with your lifestyle and independence.

This transformative procedure removes cataracts and offers options to reduce your reliance on glasses, allowing you to enjoy crystal-clear vision at all distances.

You miss the simple joys of life

From reading the newspaper to enjoying a sunset, blurry vision can rob you of life’s finer details. Cataracts and glasses make it difficult to fully engage in the activities you love.

I have received excellent treatment from Danny and his team to address a large floater and epiretinal membrane removal in my eye. Having eye surgery is a daunting prospect, but Danny very clearly explained the procedure and the risks v benefits. I felt from the beginning that I was in the hands of an expert with a genuine concern for the well being of his patients and the difficulties they can face. The vitrectomy surgery was performed in a painless way and the results have been very satisfactory, so I would recommend Danny and his team to other people looking for a similar solution.

My experience with Dr Danny Mitry has been superb. I was initially referred to him for a problem with my macula. He has a very pleasant manner and quickly put me at ease. He went on to spot something else in my eye and referred me on.
Then, recently he has operated on my cataract. This was done promptly and has meant that I can see properly again. It has been easy to get in touch with his secretary and schedule appointments so that they fit in with my schedule.
We take our sight for granted but when we lose it, even partially, it affects your confidence and ability to do many things. Hence I believe it's so important that you can have complete confidence in your doctors. I feel I have had the best possible care by Dr Mitry and would thoroughly recommend him.

I was told by my optometrist that I would need my cataracts seen to. A friend of mine who is an optometrist recommended Danny Mitry; he said he sends all his patients to Danny.

I saw Danny on the 12th June and he arranged to do the two cataracts on the 7th and 17th July respectively (I am fortunate to have Private Health Insurance, so no waiting necessary). Both surgeries went extremely well and I am delighted with the outcome.

Danny is soft spoken and friendly and clearly knows what he is doing. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending him to anyone seeking the services of an ophthalmic surgeon.

I was extremely apprehensive at the prospect of cataract surgery. I was recommended to Mr Mitry by a family member. He was very reassuring and put me at ease with clear explanations about the process. His team, from the organisation, London Clinic and Mark, his anaesthetist, all made the process seamless. I had two successful cataract operations within two weeks of each other. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Mitry.

I came to see Mr.Mitry today, I was very very nervous as I had the symptoms of a detached retina.
He didn't keep me waiting at all.
He is very, very confident and knowledgeable in what he does and very gentle.
He also has a fantastic bedside manner and calmed me down immediately.
I need to have my floaters removed and I trust him 100% to do the operation, which I shall be organising in two weeks when I see him again.
Thank you again for seeing me so promptly.
I also want to say how very efficient his secretary Beth was And also, how kind and understanding and patient.
His nurse who
gave me the eye test was also very, very kind patient and understanding

I had a problem with my right eye whilst on holiday in Sweden, my vision became distorted. I felt very anxious and I emailed Danny's private secretary as soon as I got home and was offered an appointment the following morning which I was very impressed about. I saw Danny and he was delightful . Having seen the lovely Siobhan who did various tests I then saw Danny who said I needed a vitrectomy operation and a removal of a cataract in my right eye and the operation could be done a week later. I was very nervous about the operation because I had never had eye surgery and it all sounded very scary. The operation took place on July 7th, I needn't have been so worried as the operation went very well and the entire team were delightful and very reassuring .I saw Danny again yesterday and had more tests done by the lovely Natasha and Danny told me the hole in my eye had now healed and he was very happy with the outcome. I am absolutely delighted with my experience at the London Clinic and Danny and his entire team and cannot thank them enough. My right eye is now better than my left one and the operation was only a week ago.

I am so happy to be able to see clearly for the first time in my life without lenses or glasses. At first I was nervous about having cataract surgery but Mr Mitry put me at ease and his secretary Beth. Both were so easy to get in touch with and respond to any concerns. I had my right eye done first and I can see distance and tv and drive without any glasses! I then had the left eye done two weeks later. After the right eye I explained to Mr Mitry that I loved being able to see so clearly as if a window had finally been cleaned in front of my eye. But that to read I still needed a 1.5 ready reader and that I wanted to be able to look at my phone and then up at the tv without having to put glasses on and off all the time. He very cleverly made my left eye shorter sighted so that I can now work on my phone and then look up and see in the distance also without any glasses at all. If I want to read a long novel or paper I may still need a ready reader. However day to day - for the first time in my life - I can see so well without lenses or glasses. I’m so happy to have had it done. Aftercare was great too. You have to put drops in and sleep in an eye mask just for the first night (or longer if you want) but I could drive day 2 after the first op with only sunglasses on. Before this my vision was getting worse, I had always been long sighted with an astigmatism and had to wear glasses from 5 and then lenses from 11. It is now so freeing to be able to see unaided. I would highly recommend anyone having problems with vision and advancing cataracts to go ahead and have Mr Mitry perform this surgery. A trusted and respected surgeon who is able to answer your questions every step of the way.

My optician recommended Mr. Mitry as the best surgeon to carry out the cataract operation, unfortunately my local private hospital, where Mr. Mitry had previously attended, had closed its eye department so I had to go to London to see him. No big deal, but costs seemed to be much higher at a London base rather than at a regional base. Nonetheless, the treatment was wonderful, very attentive staff at all points with no queuing at all. Mr. Mitry is an extremely personable gentleman, who is genuinely interested in his patients and continued with extreme professionalism and expertise. The operation went very smoothly and my sight improved immediately. I have followed all the follow up do's and dont's and am very happy with the outcome.

Cataract procedure
I had a cataract procedure on my left eye at the London Clinic under Mr Mitry's care. My initial assessment appointment was arranged within one week of my first enquiry and at the assessment, i was offered two dates for my procedure, and i selected the earliest date which was only just over two weeks later. The speed with which i could get my issue dealt with was a significant positive to me - no-one looks forward to eye surgery and it is no fun having a long wait for the date to arrive. The communication from the Clinic was excellent and i was able to have my pre-op health assessment over the telephone in advance and also speak with the anaesthetist. On the day of the procedure, everything ran very smoothly and i was out of the Clinic about 4.5 hours after arriving with clear instructions on post-op self-care and with all necessary medication. A post-op appointment with Mr Mitry was already in the calendar for a week later and all was fine and i was signed-off. A really smooth and successful experience and i would strongly recommend Mr Mitry for your eye health needs.

I had cataract operations a few months ago, carried out by Mr Danny Mitry at the London Clinic. The operations themselves went smoothly and the preparation beforehand was very reassuring. I did have some adverse reactions to the drops following the operations; it is therefore the aftercare given by Mr Mitry which is so exceptional, with a personal phone call to alleviate the worries I had, followed by a quick appointment for further reassurance. In my experience this degree of genuine care and understanding is very unusual.

Mr Mitry exudes professionalism and confidence in all aspects of his service which for me was very reassuring given my concerns about my eyes. He always greets you very warmly and despite his super busy schedule he has never been late for my appointment times that I imagine is quite a feat given with your eyes you always have numerous questions to ask! Mr Mitry is unfailingly patient and polite and explains the issues with your eyes in simple layman's terms without being overly simplistic and again despite his busy schedule he never seems hurried and appears to have all the time in the world to answer your questions. That said I always had complete confidence in his recommendations and never doubted his prescribed treatment was in my best interest. I would definitely recommend his service if you ever have any concerns about your eye-sight

Danny Mitry removed a cataract from my left eye and inserted an intraocular lens. I couldn’t recommend him more highly, Charming guy. He explained the process very clearly in advance and carried it out very effectively and with a very good result.. I felt no trepidation and experienced no pain. I can now see very much more clearly. Overall a very positive experience.

I am thankful to Mr Mitry and his team for two successful cataract operations within two weeks of each other. I received excellent care and the best possible advice to suit my needs. I can now be glasses-free for most tasks.
The entire process was straightforward from start to finish, the experience stress-free, and the outcome transformative. Thanks again.

Cataracts, a clouding of the lens in your eye, can affect your vision, causing mistiness, glare, and faded colors. This comprehensive guide from RNIB provides essential information about cataracts, including their causes, symptoms, and treatment options. It explains how cataract surgery restores vision by replacing the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one. Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) is a common complication following cataract surgery. It occurs when the natural lens capsule, left intact to hold the artificial intraocular lens (IOL), becomes cloudy due to cell growth. This clouding can cause blurred vision, glare, and reduced contrast sensitivity, resembling the original cataract symptoms. Fortunately, PCO is treatable with a quick, painless procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy. During this treatment, a laser creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, restoring clear vision almost immediately. Regular follow-ups after cataract surgery help detect and address PCO early, ensuring optimal visual outcomes. Click here to learn more
