How long after cataract surgery can you drive?

Cataract surgery can restore your vision, but many patients wonder: When can I start driving again?

The short answer? Most people can drive again 24 to 48 hours after surgery—but this depends on how quickly your vision stabilises. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Can’t You Drive Right After Cataract Surgery?

After cataract surgery, your eye needs time to adjust. Here’s why driving too soon is not recommended:

  • Blurred or fluctuating vision – Your eye is still healing and adjusting to the new lens.
  • Light sensitivity – Bright sunlight and headlights may feel overwhelming.
  • Glare or halos around lights – Common in the first few days.
  • Mild anesthesia effects – If you were given a sedative, it might still affect your reaction time.

When is it safe to drive again?

  • First 24 hours: You cannot drive on the day of surgery.
  • After 1–2 days: Some patients regain clear vision quickly, but always wait for your doctor’s approval.
  • After 1 week: Most patients can resume driving safely.

Your doctor will check your vision at your follow-up appointment, typically within 24–48 hours after surgery. If your eyesight meets the legal driving standard, you’ll be cleared to drive.

Signs you’re not ready to drive yet

Even if your doctor gives you the green light, avoid driving if:

  • Your vision is still blurry or unstable.
  • You struggle to judge distances or focus.
  • You experience glare or halos that make night driving difficult.

How Can You Speed Up Recovery?

  • Use your prescribed eye drops to promote healing.
  • Wear sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity.
  • Avoid rubbing your eye to prevent irritation.
  • Follow up with your doctor to ensure proper healing.
