How long does cataract surgery take?

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful medical procedures performed today. If you or a loved one is preparing for surgery, you may be wondering: How long does cataract surgery take?

The short answer? The actual procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye—but the entire process, including preparation and recovery time at the clinic, takes a few hours. Let’s walk through the timeline so you know exactly what to expect.

Before the surgery: Pre-op preparation

When you arrive for cataract surgery, the medical team will go through a few steps to prepare your eye:

  1. Dilation drops: Eye drops are used to widen your pupil, making it easier for the surgeon to remove the cataract.
  2. Anesthetic drops: Your eye will be completely numbed, so you won’t feel any pain.
  3. Mild sedative (If needed): Some patients receive a light sedative to help them feel relaxed, but you will remain awake during the procedure.

Time needed: About 30–45 minutes

The Surgery: What happens in the operating room?

Cataract surgery is quick and painless, typically lasting 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Here’s how it works:

  1. A small incision is made in the cornea (the clear front part of your eye).
  2. Ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification) breaks the cloudy lens into tiny pieces.
  3. The pieces are removed, and a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens or IOL) is inserted in its place.
  4. The incision heals on its own—no stitches needed!

Time needed: 10–15 minutes per eye

After the Surgery: Immediate Recovery

After the procedure, you’ll be taken to a recovery area where the team will monitor you for a short time. You may notice:

  • Slight blurriness as your eye adjusts
  • Mild sensitivity to light
  • A protective shield over your eye

Most patients go home within 30–60 minutes after surgery, but you will need someone to drive you.

Total time at the clinic: Around 2–3 hours

When will my vision improve?

  • 24 Hours: Some patients notice clearer vision the next day.
  • 1 Week: Most healing happens within the first week, but you may have mild fluctuations.
  • 4 to 6 Weeks: Full recovery and stable vision.
